south, the right two lanes on that highway shut down, all after a very bizarre accident this afternoon. >> reporter: crews hard at work, removing an overhead highway sign, damaged in a midafternoon accident, involving this massive flatbed truck, hauling an excavator. state police explaining it all unfolded at around 1:30, near i- 95, when the truck struck an overpass. >> the driver apparently failed to lower part of the excavator. and when he came under this bridge, the boom of the excavator hit the bridge, damaged the highway sign, struck the bridge. the operator continued on through and pulled to the side of the road. >> reporter: that accident now snarling traffic on what are two of the busiest highways during rush hour. and that's likely to continue into the evening, as officials inspect the bridge to make sure it has not been compromised. >> reporter: a live look from sky eye chopper 13. you can see that the work here

continues. it is a long line of traffic backups on 695. problems on 95 as well. meanwhile, that bridge inspection is going to continue into the night. a lot of these cars finally getting through some of this traffic now. that inspection continues into the night. the driver of that truck, likely going to be facing charges when this is all over. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. our complete coverage continues now with wjz traffic control. kristy breslin as a closer look at those backups. we saw all of those lights stretching for a long way, kristy. >> unfortunately, yes, mary. and that's already a difficult spot on the outer loop of the beltway, at the 95 southbound overpass. the two right-hand lanes are blocked. the delay, as you can see, stretches back to almost 795. if you're going in that direction, you can expect at least 30 minutes to get through the delay. now, as far as the other side, it's also impacting traffic on the inner loop. things are slow from 70 up to liberty road in that direction.

but they do break free after that. so the best-case scenario is to avoid the southwest side of the outer loop at all costs. we'll continue to bring you up to date. back to you. >> right now, an investigation is under way, after a person is hit and killed by a light rail train in baltimore county. denise is in the newsroom with more on what happened. >> reporter: well, vic, a woman died this morning after she was struck by a train. it happened around 7: 00 a.m., in the central corridor around trutherville. transit officials are not sure why she crossed the tracks. she was not near a light rail stop when she was hit. the mta set up a shuttle bus service to transport patients to different spots while the investigation is still under way. police are also looking into the incident. desire a family is devastated tonight, after their loved one is shot by city police officers. officers, though, say the man had a knife and refused to drop it. mike hellgren has the unfolding

investigation for us. >> police have identified the man they thought of as franklin williams. he remains in critical condition. >> reporter: the ca -- chaotic scene unfolded after police responded to a call about a family disturbance. it was on moral -- morly street. when they got to the home, officers say they found franklin williams in an upstairs bedroom, holding a knife. they tried to get him to put it down. but they say he would not. so they shot him, several times. >> i heard three shots. gunshots. >> reporter: neighbor shannon then remembers hearing williams' mother cry out. >> you said she was in tears. >> yeah. oh, yeah. >> reporter: but her son was still alive and was rushed to the hospital. as of this point, police have not identified the officer who fired the shots. >> william's sister was too shaken to speak to wjz.

she did tell our news partner, the sun, the brother suffers from schizophrenia and lives with his parents. here's how police described what happened, calling his parents, unruly and argumentative. >> he began to advance at police officers that night, after numerous commands. police officers asked him to drop the knife. he did not comply and was shot. >> this saturday 11th police shooting is this year. internal affairs is investigating. >> and that is routine in cases like this. reporting live at city police headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. mary? >> all right. the officers and other family be members were not injured. a man holds up a bank. officers arrested the man about 20 minutes later near the liberal arts building. police say it activated the alert system to notify people inside.

hundreds from the law enforcement community attended the funeral for 39-year-old derek kraus. he was making a traffic stop last thursday when police say a student from a nearby college walked up to his cruiser and shot him. investigators believe the attack was unprovoked. kraus is survived by a white and five children. a towson position at the center of a massive malpractice investigation said he considers taking its own -- his own life. now, many are upset by those comentdzs from dr. mark miday. >> reporter: some of the patients are outraged by dr. meday's weekend comments, saying they're the ones who suffered, not him. >> reporter: in his first extended interview, since being accused of performing unnecessary medical procedures, dr. mark meday exclusively tells our newspaper partner, the baltimore sun -- >> it has been incalculable. >> he said he has been stripped

from his identity. he found himself under federal investigation. since then, more than 200 patients have filed lawsuits. and he lost his medical license. >> i think he deserves everything he gets. >> vicky mars is one patient who claims dr. meday performed a stent surgery for a blocked artery, which another doctor later found unclogged. >> he said i had a 10%. and he said i had 90% and that i needed the stent. >> reporter: her attorney claims miday's depression comments are an attempt to influence jurors in potential lawsuits that could go to trial next spring. >> i can't wait for attorneys to get on this. everyone that hears this is shocked, with good reason. >> reporter: meday maintains his innocence, telling the sun, i've never treated a single patient that didn't need to be treated. every one of them needed the treatment and they received high-quality care. he went on to say that public doubt has been difficult. >> it's been an extreme challenge to get through each

and every day. i just live it one day at a time. >> reporter: and attorney jay miller, who represents those patients, also tells me moments ago, that jurors will not be very simthetic toward -- sympathetic towards dr. meday. >> meday has filed an appeal in circuit court, hoping he'll get his medical license back. the ravens continue to soar with their winning streak reaching four in a row. wjz is live at the team complex in owings mills. sports director mark viviano joins us with the latest. great game on sunday. >> it was that. it was a convincing win over the colts as expected. but the ravens know, the road ahead is certainly more challenging. next weekend, it is a road game at san diego. >> woo! >> the ravens appear to be unbeatable at home. the lonely colts came to town and got knocked around. the outcome never in doubt in a 24-10 final.

this date. this morning, however, we were down to 22. that was the coldest morning so far this late fall season. 19 out to the west. 20 up in elkton. and 24, ocean city. now, a lot of people asking me, what's going to happen next week before christmas? well, the pattern right now, does not favor tiptsz what the storm track, well to our west, does not favor a coastal storm or anything that would bring us anything of the white stuff. looks like all of that activity will stay well to the west. so next week, looks like, unfortunately, we're going to be on the mild side, kids. that's the way it looks right now. >> the occupy wall street movement finds a new target today. thousands of protestors are gathering at sea ports along the west coast in hopes of disrupting business there. bigad shaban reports from long beach, california. >> a line of blue faced off

against this. it's the latest in the occupy ball street movement. going from this. >> diagramistrators claim they are the economic engine. >> we think this is about labor across the board. about outsourcing of jobs. >> and semi trucks were forced to navigate long lines in the pouring rain. >> the long beach port is the second busiest in the u.s. and the union that represents dock workers here say its doesn't support attempts attempts to shut it down. >> protestors say with or without that support, their movement will gather strength. >> all that is happening is they'll occupy a comeback with more and more people.

the deadline for the towz to withdraw from iraq is only three weeks away. iraq is meeting with president obama to discuss the turnover. tara mergener reports. president obama and iraqi prime minister nouri al-maliki stood side by side at arlington, laying a wreath for those who died fighting the war in iraq. al-maliki visited washington, as the u.s. prepares to withdraw all remaining u.s. fighting forces. president obama is keeping a pledge to end the almost nine-

year-long war this month. >> the last will cross the border out of iraq. with honor and with their heads held high. >> reporter: the president and prime minister praised the cooperation between the two countries. >> reporter: but some u.s. officials are concerned, neighboring iran will step up influence on iraq, once american forces leave. president obama is confident that won't be a problem. >> i have absolutely no doubt that these decisions are being made based on what prime minister maliki believes is best for iraq. not based on considerations of what iran would like to see. >> reporter: on the battlefield, u.s. forces are taking part in what one military officer called the biggest logistical operation since world war ii.

they're handing over bases and moving equipment to kuwait. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news remember. >> the troop withdrawal will mark the end of the nearly nine- year war. at the height of the war in 2007, 170,000 troops were serving in iraq. a public-private partnership is bringing much- needed funding to our nation's park. today, in baltimore, a major announcement from toyota, showing its commitment to more than just building cars. >> toyota is donating $3 million to the national environmental education foundation. it will help fund programs to enrich parks and land across the country. >> we wanted to make sure that we make the smallest footprint, as possible on the environment. that we do everything to make parks like this thrive. not survive, but thrive. >> everybody look at me. >> the announcement is made at fort mchenry today, which best combines the outdoors, education and history into one big lesson for students. >> this donation is going to

the average low. records on this day, 71, 1989. 19 above zero, the low. tomorrow may go back to the north, temporarily. then we're going to see a west to southwest wind. kicking in mild air. there's clouds to our south, as you can see across virginia. that's what we're seeing in the sky now. these are high, thin clouds. also, a batch of rain here. that's moving offshore. will not impact us at all. this low pressure in california, rain in l.a. today. yeah, snow in the mountains there. that's going to head out to our west. that storm track does not favor super cold temperatures in the east. in fact, it favors mild air because low pressure passes to the west. circular low pressure to the south. every time that storm tracks north of us, it gets cold west of the storm track. like in wisconsin or places

like that. but east of the area, here in the east, it's going to stay on the mild side. so not great weather for skiing in at least the next 10 days or so. although they may be making snow in some areas. but doesn't look like we're in a pattern right now, where we see extended cold. once again, it's warming up. as this high moves off, here comes more mild air. wednesday, thursday. with maybe a few showers. maybe getting up again to 60 degrees just one week and a half or so before the christmas holiday. northwest winds. 5 to 10 knots. the bay temp at 48 degrees. sunrise, 7:17. sets again at 4:44. tonight, it will clear out. down to 29. maybe 34 down by the inner harbor. and tomorrow, sunshine. a few patchy clouds. all in all, a very pleasant day. it will start off cold and frosty again. but in the afternoon, back up to 52. once again, the normal is 46. we got to call that a mild,

it is 5:29. 39 degrees with just a few clouds out there. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. updating the breaking situation. an oversized truck smashes into an overpass, causing traffic delays for miles. sky eye chopper 13 over the scene with the latest. complete coverage -- captain mike perry is above it with more for us. >> we are, indeed, over top of the southwest side of the beltway. this is the outer loop to 695 and i-95. we're about 1:30 this afternoon, this truck that you referred to, with an excavator on the back, struck the bridge overpass. at i-95. and a sign. what you're looking at is about 15 pieces of that state highway administration apparatus. they are here, surveying the damage.

apparently a sign was struck and has been removed from the bridge. but there is structural damage to a girder underneath. and that apparently is what is holding things up here. three lanes of the outer loop beltway remains closed at 95. and the backup here is extensive. but work continues here. no word on how long state highways or the state miswill continue their investigation. of this accident. back to you on tv hill. >> captain mike. thank you so much. well, our complete coverage does continue now, with wjz traffic control. wjz has a look at that. kristy? >> captain mike has said, the three right lanes are blocked. that has your delay now past liberty road. it is just bumper to bumper, getting through. it's going to take you at least 30 minutes. it's also impacting the inner loop. we have delays on the inner loop as well from 70 to liberty road. those delays not as significant. it should only take you about 20 minutes to get through. but the southwest side of the

inner loop, definitely not the place to be at this hour. as far as the rest of the traffic goes, we are also seeing delays on the north side outer loop, not nearly as bad. providence road to charles street. and northbound 95, also heavy in that direction, from pulaski highway, to the beltway. that's on the northeast side. in harford county, two new accidents to report. level road at churchville road. also, route 1 at the hickory bypass. as far as baltimore city goes, we have threes in that region. erdmann avenue at harford road. north broadway at east monument. also, patterson avenue at everly drive. plenty of brake lights there, that's a look at the beltway at frederick road. also, very heavy, the same situation there. a look at the beltway. north of security boulevard. this traffic is -- traffic report is brought to you. you can call them at 1-877-75- bills. back to you. baltimore police have new information and a charles

village stabbing. detectivesdetectives have developed a sketch of a suspect who robbed and stabbed a 27- year-old suspect last month. it happened sunday, november 26th at a gas station in the 2200 block. the victim was treated and released at the hospital. anyone who recognizes the suspect should call police. a virginia teenager is free, after five months in captivity in the jungle in the philippines. denise has more on the teen's daring escape. >> reporter: well, kevin lundsman will be heading home in time for the holidays. the 14-year-old was on vacation with his family in july, when they were kidnapped by muslim militants. his mother was released and his cousin escaped. he said he tricked his captors by earning their trust. then asking to go to a nearby river to bathe. when he was alone, he took off into the jungle. kevin's father called him a hero. >> he went two days in the

jungle. and i'm so proud of my son. and i really think everybody in the community, whatever they did, thank you. >> kevin is currently in the hospital in manila, getting treatment for bruises. >> kevin's father says he should be home in a week. >> former penn state football coach, joe paterno faces difficulties with his health. paterno is hospitalized after a fall in his home. but he's not expected to need surgery. he is also undergoing treatment for lung cancer. he was fired last month, in connection with the sex abuse scandal. >> and paterno's former colleague, jerry san dunky sandusky is preparing to go to court for the first time on child molestation charges. but a new report has the accuracy on what is given to him. >> the preliminary hearing will be the public's first chance to hear directly from some of the young men who claim sandusky

sexually abused them as children. jerry sandusky will be there to hear their testimony, too. and his lawyer says -- >> well, he's dreading it. as you can imagine, he's going to have to sit in a courtroom, with a couple hundred people. i understand, it's going to be filled to capacity, including members of his family and friends who are going to listen to some of these young men say horrific things occurred between them and jerry. >> reporter: and cbs news has learned that a key prosecution witness is also scheduled to testify. mike mcqueary. mcqueary is the former penn state assistant coach, who told a grand jury that in 2002, he saw jerry sandusky in a locker room shower on the penn state campus, sexually assaulting a young boy. according to the grand jury report, he says he saw a boy he estimated to be 10 years old, with his hands up against the wall, be being haiped by a naked sandusky. but a local newspaper report sunday raised new questions

about whether mcqueary may have told a different story back then. the harrisburg patriot news, quoting a source, says that after the incident, mcqueary went to his father's home, where a family friend, dr. jonathan dranoff. he says at the time, mcqueary heard sex sounds, saw a young boy stick his head around the corner and an adult arm reached around and pulled the boy back. the paper said dranoff told grand jurors, he asked him several times if he saw anything sexual, and several times, mcqueary said no. at dranoff's home sunday, a woman declined to comment. >> we're not opening the door. goodbye. >> reporter: mcqueary also declined to speak. >> and that was anna werner, reporting from state college. sandusky will not testify tomorrow. and no cameras will be allowed in the courtroom. another former head of a

sports organization. bobby dod is the former president and ceo of the amateur athletic union. according to espn, the players claim dod sexually abused them. dod can no longer be reached for comment. he is no longer associated with the aau. a bloody fight rat the end of a basketball game. violence broke out between cincinnati and xavier. cynthia bowers reports for wjz with reaction from both schools. >> it's called the crosstown shootout. and something the loser is reminded daily. >> this is going to be a lop- sided win for xav gerrier. >> reporter: with nine seconds left, it took a -- an ugly turn. seconds later, tenzs that had been simmering since last year exploded into an all-out brawl. >> and this is the last thing

you want to see. the benches clear. >> reporter: fists were flying. anyone in the way was a target. >> boy, that was a shot from yancy gates to kenny freeze. >> reporter: before order was restored, xavier forward kenny freeze stood beaten and bloody. both appeared shell shocked after the melee. >> i don't know another word other than disappointing. >> i've never been this embarrassed. i made them all take their jersey off. and they will not put it on again until they have an understanding of where they go to school and how lucky they are to even be there. >> reporter: but xavier players, holloway and mark lyons seemed independent. >> they're grown members over there. >> at the end of the day, if somebody puts their hands in your face or try to do something to you, you're going to do something back. >> reporter: four players from each team faced suspensions, including holloway, who apologized today. >> we're not thugs.

we're not bad kids here at xavier university. i really apologize for what took place yesterday. >> the ncaa is considering further penalties. an ohio prosecutor looking into the case says possible charges could include assault and battery or disorderly conduct. protecting passenger rights at airport security checkpoints. tonight, senator charles schumer calls for investigation. three elderly women have accused the transportation administration of strip searching them at the airport. schumer says there needs to be a balance. >> instead of being a pleasant, if sometimes frustrating experience for these passengers, flying became a degrading experience. that should be avoided at all costs. >> schumer is recommending the tsa appoint passenger advocates at every airport to deal with

passengers screens complaints. in tonight's healthwatch, doctors struggling to understand the minds of autistic children. randall pinkston reports for wjz. the answer may be in the eyes. >> mike and laura chavalino have their hands full with 7- year-old triplets. two of them, michael and francesca have autism. like most kids with the disorder, both have trouble identifying emotions in others. they're more likely to focus on octs. >> there is a difference in what they are focused on. >> now, scientists believe the blink of an eye may help explain why. >> the less a child blinks, the more they're paying attention to what is happening. >> reporter: in a new study, researchers tracked the blink rate of children watching a video of kids playing. during emotional scenes, the rates for typical children

slowed down, while autistic patients blinked normally. that changed when autistic kids spotted movement. >> they stopped blinking when they were looking at an and an object in motion. >> reporter: researchers say this could help develop improved therapies. >> what this research does is gives us a new tool for essentially understanding what might be capturing the attention of children with autism. >> reporter: knowing what interests autistic children could eventually help doctors treat the disorder earlier. >> therapy is incredibly important. children who receive early intervention for symptoms of autism are reported to have the greatest gains in function. >> reporter: this the gives them a better understanding of how michael and francesca see the world. >> randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> and researchers say studies will use the blink rates to test new therapy techniques. time now for ray quick look at some of the stories you'll find in the baltimore sun.
